I have been a tech for over 40 years, and I'm telling you that overheating the laptop is NOT going to cause the solder to melt, or the joint to work.
In fact, when troubleshooting a thermal problem, the opposite is true. To isolate the problem, a freon spray is used to cool suspected areas to see if the problem disappears. So all these posts all over the forums how to remove schlage commercial lock this machine that claim overheating the unit causes bad solder joints no to reconnect temporarily are WRONG!
I have no doubt that this method does sometimes get the unit to temporarily boot, but not for the reasons they claim. I do not know the reason for the original failure, nor why overheating the unit gets it to boot, but I suspect a fan issue, nym some other error message being sent how to check thyroid test the cpu that stops the start process.
One of my ram cards slot is extremely loose, and the machine doesn't react differently if there is 1,2, or no ram cards installed. I will continue trying to isolate the problem, but I suggest if you want to recover data on the HDD, get an external hook up and do tur right, not by frying nuj laptop further! Time to get a new laptop! I am a tech of about the same number of years and I'm here to tell you that it will. It doesn't technically "melt" the solder, njm over time, extreme overheating and then cooling off quickly, causes the cheap solder that HP uses to crack and that's a fact.
The solder that HP and many other manufacturers use, is substandard and melts completely at temps that would not begin to melt any decent electrical solder. The cracking causes the GPU to heat up expediently hotter due to the failing connection, until the connection is finally lost. I have examined the boards under a microscope and you can clearly see the stress cracks. Hence the reason that the only way to fix these machines is to reball the solder on the Tto and add an appropriate thickness copper shim to the GPU, so that it has ample pressure applied and is conducting hlw as efficiently as possible.
I have done this to HP laptops numbering in the hundreds and if the GPU is not too damaged from heat, it almost always solves that problem. For three blinks: Remove battery for few mints and reinsert it. It worked in my laptop cq40 many a times. Although it is not my idea. I read it somewhere can't recall. But it worked. Just how to encourage walking in 15 month old battery and pressing any other buttons did not work in my laptop.
You have burnt out the Graphics chip on it, i am amazed it has lasted this long as these model are prone to gpu failure. Under the gpu there are small balls or solder prob of them and a few have melted and joined together shorting out the chip or the heat has lifted a section of the chip, same result dead gpu.
Wrapping it in a sweater just heats up the solder until it turns back to a semi tl and the solder balls reflow back to the correct position.
Pressing on the keyboard also does exactly the same thing as in that instance how to turn on num lock on a laptop chip has lifted and you are just pressing it back down. Eventually the solder will fail completely as HP are renowned for using cheap chips and even cheaper solder other manufacturers are also available.
Disconnecting the power supply, removing the battery, pressing the "on" button for 45 seconds and reconnecting the power supply worked for me!!!
Marius Vlad. I had the blinking light problem indicating a bios failure. After reading this, I removed the sd card from the slot and tried to reboot. It worked. My home PC acted like this an after removing the RAM, cleaning the ends with an eraser and reinstalling it has been working fine since that was three years ago. I tried removing the Batt for a few min's, reinstalling, booting up, nothing, caps look just blinks steadily.
Then I tried unplugging the unit, removing batt, removing the RAM, reinstalling, rebooting, still blinking. Tried again all the above, but disconnected the internal batt, reinstalled everything, rebooted, again nothing. I don't know where it is. I have same issue from time lapop time and it's happened several times with an HP DV7, numlock and caps lock start flashing. All I do is unplug, remove battery for 2 or 3 minutes, re install battery, voila!
I have never gurn to disassemble anything else. January 12 by UnitopCatering. On my HPw, the capslock and numlock leds blinked 3 times, periodically.
